Arugula - Roquette Music Vinyl LP

Impressed is proud to present Arugula - Meanjin/Gubbi Gubbi based garage/psych punk quintet - and their debut album Roquette Music on exclusive on limited edition tomato red vinyl.

Arugula’s Roquette Music is a 10 track journey that feels as though your ears have stepped into a time machine and arrived in the 60s. Combining hypnotic repetition and familiar odes this transmission proves the band are a force to be rocked with. The album is flourished with rhythms that have sprouted from 60s pop and garage roots, vintage country twang, mantras and the shadowy aura of the modern psych in an exciting new and entirely unique manner. 

Entirely home-recorded, and produced by band leader Harding Bradburn the production was delicately engineered to feel proudly out of place from modern slickness and embellish the groups high octane live performance in a lo-fi package that feels like a foggy representation of the past. Heavily inspired by the likes of 60s and 70s garage-pop, proto-punk and freakbeat music the distorted warm songs revolve around themes of love,lust, resistance, regret and the altering of perception. 

Diving deeper into the rabbit hole than ever before, more defined velcro fuzz and spring reverb guitars, bouncing organ tones, rubbery bass and thin boxy vocals are evident on this venture. Additionally, the album features a plethora of new instruments and sounds used for the first time by the group including sitar, glockenspiel, violin, mellotron and rhodes electric keyboard tones to further push the psychedelic ways of Arugula. 

The album also features a cover of The Standells’ hit, Dirty Water where the band put their own unique spin on the garage classic to showcase their love for Brisbane. 

Like That (I’m Not Going To Be Spoken To) the last single to drop before the album is a 60s pop/proto-punk/garage styled tune that thematically follows a loose narrative about not putting up with toxic relationships and instead trusting your gut and making the tough, but self respecting choice of breaking up with your partner. This song instrumentally was inspired by the likes of ? and The Mysterians, Rolling Stones, The Frowning Clouds and The Seeds.

Arugula have spent the last two years playing shows in and around Brisbane. As well as venturing interstate to NSW and VIC in support of their first two EPs and a bunch of single releases. The band have had the pleasure of supporting many notable acts including The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds, Mildlife, Zia McCabe, Nice Biscuit and many more.
