This was Charlie Gradon’s response when asked to describe his sophomore album, Pain Game.
From the first listen, it’s clear this is a very different record to his debut, ‘Colours of my Daydream. That album was meticulously rehearsed, pre-produced and predominantly recorded live. Pain Game is a return to Charlie’s home studio, embracing the freedom to layer, experiment and capture moments as they happened rather than trying to recreate them later. The result is a record that feels warm, immediate and deeply human. Recorded almost entirely by himself, Gradon also took on the daunting task of mixing the album.
“I ended up having to set a date and say, wherever the songs are by then, that’s how they sound. I also made a lot of late changes to the track listing, which was a very stressful experience, but I’m hoping the songs that didn’t make the cut will eventually find their way out into the world.”
Often hailed as a prolific songwriter, Charlie spends much of his time in a home studio in Northern NSW. When he’s not there, he can usually be found behind the kit for psych-rock lords Turtle Skull, who have been touring their third album, Being Here.
