RIDE’s Andy Bell heads further into the electronic underground with GLOK, folding acid house, krautrock, ambient drift and shoegaze atmosphere into something hypnotic and distinctly his own. Motorik rhythms, glowing synths and slow-burn psychedelia make this ideal territory for fans of leftfield electronics, late-night headphones and records that get better the deeper you go.
Andy Bell is a founding member, guitarist and songwriter of shoegaze pioneers RIDE, whose landmark records Nowhere and Going Blank Again helped define the sound of early-’90s British guitar music. He later spent a decade playing bass with Oasis, followed by Beady Eye, before returning to RIDE and developing his own solo work. Under the name GLOK, Bell explores the more electronic side of his musical world, drawing on krautrock, acid house, ambient and psychedelia.
On Dissident Remixed, Andy Bell’s GLOK project is pulled apart and rebuilt for the small hours. The shoegaze haze remains, but around it swirl acid basslines, dub shadows, psychedelic disco and the steady throb of late-night electronics. With Andrew Weatherall, Maps, Richard Sen, Jay Glass Dubs, C.A.R. and others reshaping the material, the record feels less like a remix collection than an alternate universe - one where krautrock, club culture and dream-pop all meet under the same strobe light.
Dissident, the debut album from RIDE’s Andy Bell, recording as his electronic alter ego GLOK, was released last year to widespread acclaim. On Dissident Remixed, album no 7 on Bytes, lil’ sister of Ransom Note Records, members of the extended Ransom Note family and fans of GLOK and RIDE have come together to reimagine the source material in a rich smorgasbord of styles. The late, great Andrew Weatherall, Richard Sen, Maps, Jay Glass Dubs, C.A.R., Timothy Clerkin, Franz Kirmann, Minotaur Shock and the man himself all step up to lend their talents to the project and the results are stunning.
Richard Sen kicks things off with his swaggering remix of the album’s title track, distilling the 20-minute John Carpenter-meets-Krautrock original into seven-minutes of psychedelic disco-dub, with Andy’s John Squire-esque guitar licks to the fore. Add an Ian Brown vocal and this is what the Third Coming of the Stone Roses should have sounded like.
Andy’s contribution is a game changer, as the widescreen ambient-techno throb of ‘Pulsing’ is revamped over 15 hypnotic and glorious minutes. Imagine Mr Fingers at 33rpm, augmented by plaintive piano lines and dissonant atmospherics. This is the slo-mo acid-house/shoegaze hybrid you didn't know you needed.
Timothy Clerkin’s remix of ‘Projected Sounds’ is the perfect foil for Andy’s epic excursion. The Insult to Injury head honcho takes the propulsive Neu! meets Steve Reich original and sloooooows it right down, with squelchy acid lines, chanted vocals and trippy effects. It’s ‘Voodoo Ray’ for the shoegaze generation.
The mighty Andrew Weatherall’s contribution is a timely reminder of why he will be so sorely missed. A master of atmosphere and rhythm, the Guv’nor transforms the soaring, ambient-acoustic ‘Cloud Cover’ into a subaquatic electroid groover, with echoes of his work as Two Lone Swordsmen. (It is his TLS partner in crime, Keith Tenniswood, on mastering duties for the remix album.)
C.A.R. (aka Chloé Raunet) unearths the hauntology in ‘Weaver’, as a sinister bass throb underpins the Ghost Box synths and Andy’s spidery guitar lines. Maps delivers GLOK to the sonic cathedral with his incredible version of ‘Pulsing’, all epic, hands-in-the-air synths and cascading drum rolls, while Jay Glass Dubs serves up a majestic dub rework of ‘Exit Through the Skylight’.
Andy’s Bytes labelmates also get a piece of the action, with Minotaur Shock’s meaty, beaty, big and bouncy remix of ‘Weaver’, and Franz Kirmann taking ‘Kolokol’ for a spin around the M25 in search of a rave. Franz also delivers a jarring dub of his remix, slowing ‘Kolokol’ down with a grinding groove and clattering percussion. And last but not least, Leaf Troup demonstrates his expert editing skills by compressing the sprawling title track into a bitesize tech-trance banger.

Under the name GLOK, Bell explores the more electronic side of his musical world, drawing on krautrock, acid house, ambient and psychedelia.
The name GLOK is a misspelling of the German word for Bell. The German connection fits well as there is a strong Krautrock influence in the music, especially on the title track, ‘Dissident’, an epic clocking in just shy of the 20-minute mark, which blends synthwave, minimalism, trance, Detroit techno and John Carpenter soundtracks, with Andy even dropping in some killer John Squire-esque guitar licks. It’s a real journey, but rather than driving down Kraftwerk’s Autobahn, this is one for a spaced-out night time joyride down the M40 that connects Andy’s home city of Oxford to the capital, a journey evoked in the grid of time-lapsed car light tracers of the cover art (by Graeme Swinton).
The previously unreleased ‘Kolokol’ is named after the Russian for Bell and was the original artist name for the project, until Andy discovered it was also the word for a chemical poison used in assassinations. However, there is nothing dark about this blissed-out slice of Balearic gorgeousness, the perfect soundtrack for the sunset at Café Del Mar. ‘Pulsing’ is the heart of the album, a widescreen ambient techno wonder that Weatherall and Fearless would be proud to put their name to, with dissonant atmospherics and an acid throb.
The next three tracks demonstrate Andy’s versatility, nodding more to his day job as his sublime guitar playing comes to the fore. ‘Weaver’ is like a Ghost Box remix of the Beatles’ Strawberry Fields Forever; the propulsive ‘Projected Sounds’ has echoes of Neu! and Can in its buzzing guitar and hammered piano melody, while the soaring acoustic bliss of ‘Cloud Cover’ could be a RIDE track shorn of the band’s Byrdsian vocal harmonies. Closer ‘Exit Through the Skylight’, another previously unreleased track, is Skee Mask on the happy pills.
