Grace Robinson has been in character her whole life: youngest female booking agent in the country, electro-soul queen of Empress, choir director of Northside Musicians Choir and Guuranda, the first Aboriginal-language opera — she’s worn every hat except her own.

Now, with the openness of a rookie and considered strength of a veteran, she’s putting on her brave party hat with debut solo record ‘choppy’ out November 13th, recorded with ARIA-winning engineer Alex Gorman (Angie McMahon) and producer Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, The National, Julia Jacklin). The title choppy was, and still is Grace's childhood nickname (because of her chubby cheeks), and the record is exactly that - a return to herself, and the sound of her finding her voice as a solo musician. It’s an undeniable re-introduction to an established artist, laden with Julia Jacklin ache and Sharon Van Etten swagger, plus choruses built for crowds to scream like it's their diary too.

With distinctly Australian wit and an effortless sincerity, Grace sings unapologetically about anxiety, family, pressure, neurodivergence and grief - all imbued with what she jokingly calls her “obnoxious bogan energy” and softened by an edgy vulnerability that defies Australia’s ‘too cool’ aesthetics. There’s a reckless energy to her A-type writing; perfect melodies, hard-hitting lyrics destined for indie-rock. Her vocal technicality, shaped by her jazz training, shines through as a paradox within the genre, yet she makes it feel entirely natural.

She’s sold out headlines across Australia, toured alongside the likes of Middle Kids, JET, Hiatus Kaiyote and TOPS (CA), and taken to the stage at Dark Mofo, PANAMA, Brunswick Music Festival, Beyond The Valley, Strawberry Fields, Wonder Mountain, Queenscliff Music Festival and more. Despite being in her mid-twenties, her career receipts are astonishingly long, making it to ARIA-adjacent by nineteen as a jazz singer, and never stopping over-achieving since.

When she’s not pouring every cell in her body into a performance, she’s dislocating her shoulder in a rogue basketball match, cheering on the ‘Pies at the MCG, or working behind the scenes as a booking agent at WAT Artists, booking some of Australia’s most respected sell-out tours, & programming at key Australian festival stages, representing artists including Ruby Gill, Hannah Cameron, Immy Owusu and Allysha Joy. Despite Grace’s longstanding relationship with the Australian music scene, choppy introduces her as her truest self: a coming-of-age record made in the 26th year of life.
