Produced by John Parish, whose decades-long creative partnership with PJ Harvey has birthed some of her most celebrated work, There Is a Light on the Horizon Line was recorded in Bristol where Sparke - now based in California - decamped to work on the record at 33 weeks pregnant. That threshold - between one life and another - runs through the album. Written across a period of profound personal transformation, the songs explore love, motherhood, devotion, memory, identity and the strange ways we are remade by intimacy.

Musically, the album represents Sparke at her most expansive. The stark intimacy of her acclaimed debut album Echo (2021) and widescreen emotionality of its quickfire follow-up Hysteria (2022) remain, but here they meet a rawer, more visceral and instinctive band sound, with a ’90s alternative-rock current running through Sparke’s songwriting. Parish assembled an exceptional cast around the songs, including Portishead’s Adrian Utley, Seb Rochford and Shahzad Ismaily, alongside longtime collaborator Adam Brisbin.

The record also arrives with a remarkable story of artistic evolution. Sparke’s first two albums were made alongside Adrianne Lenker, Andrew Sarlo and Aaron Dessner; this third chapter with Parish continues an extraordinary lineage of collaborators while pushing her somewhere entirely new. In the four years since Hysteria, Sparke became a mother and expanded her creative practice into writing, fashion and visual storytelling. As such, There Is a Light on the Horizon Line feels less like a return than a transformation. It captures an artist at a genuine threshold—between old and new selves, solitude and family, intimacy and expansiveness—and opens the door to the most ambitious chapter of Sparke’s career to date.

Sparke first came to international attention at SXSW in 2019, where NPR’s Bob Boilen discovered ‘the day i drove the car around the block’ while listening through some 1,300 artists. Captivated by a song whose lyrics he said “both cut hard and comfort,” Boilen sought out Sparke’s showcase and invited her to perform an NPR Tiny Desk Concert.

Echo, which was co-produced by Lenker and Sarlo, followed in 2021, with Pitchfork calling the record “a dark little star of intimacy and intensity,” praising Sparke’s “quicksilver emotional ferocity.” Her second album, Hysteria, saw her enter a more widescreen world with producer Aaron Dessner, whose work spans Taylor Swift, Bon Iver and Gracie Abrams. Pitchfork described the shift as moving from “a whisper in your ear” to “a howl from a mountaintop.” Across both albums, Sparke has received further widespread press support from the likes of The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Uncut, MOJO, Harper’s Bazaar, The FADER, Paste, The Line of Best Fit, Under the Radar and more.

In 2023, Sparke co-wrote ‘In the Garden’ with Chairlift’s Patrick Wimberly, known for his work with Solange and Blood Orange, with production by Jake Portrait of Unknown Mortal Orchestra. In the intervening years, her music has taken her around the world, touring and sharing stages with Big Thief, The National, The War on Drugs, Spoon and Waxahatchee, alongside appearances at SXSW, Splendour in the Grass, End of the Road, Into the Great Wide Open and Pitchfork London.

More recently, Sparke’s creative world has also extended into fashion and visual culture. She performed live for Ulla Johnson’s Spring/Summer 2023 New York Fashion Week runway show at the Brooklyn Museum, was invited by Dries Van Noten to curate a record selection for its Los Angeles store, and was the subject of a Harper’s Bazaar x Free People editorial and interview. She also writes frequently through her Substack, On Love and Becoming, on themes of love, motherhood and transformation.

These collaborations reflect the broader world around Sparke’s music, where fashion, image-making, writing and sound continually intersect. Taken together, they reflect an artist undertaking true, multi-faceted world-building in pursuit of their art - There Is a Light on the Horizon Line might be her first album in four years, but it feels like the one she’s been building to her whole life.
