A haunting collision of taonga pūoro, orchestral dread, and gothic atmosphere, the score for the acclaimed feature film Mārama directed by Taratoa Stappard, is a powerful sonic companion to one of Aotearoa New Zealand's most distinctive cinematic works. Described as a "Māori gothic horror" Mārama is a visually rich and psychologically charged story set in Victorian England, following a young Māori woman as she confronts the violent legacy of colonialism while reclaiming her whakapapa and spiritual power.
Composed by award-winning screen composer Karl Sölve Steven and master taonga pūoro practitioner Rob Thorne (Ngāti Tumutumu, Ngāti Tamaterā, Ngāti Raukawa, Tainui Hauraki), the score merges ancient Māori instrumentation with extended orchestral textures to create a deeply emotional and unsettling sound world.
Moving between suffocating tension and moments of profound cultural remembrance, the score evokes both the physical horror of empire and the metaphysical presence of tūpuna watching from beyond. Harrowing, mournful, and ultimately transcendent, the soundtrack mirrors the emotional and spiritual journey at the heart of the film.
Recorded in Aotearoa and Iceland, the soundtrack combines Rob Thorne's performances of taonga pūoro including the pūtātara, porotiti and tumutumu with orchestral sessions by Sinfonia Nord, recorded at Stúdíó Sýrland in Reykjavík. The score also features the rare halldorophone, performed by Icelandic musician Júlía Mogensen. One of only a handful of instruments of its kind in the world, the halldorophone's unique electroacoustic feedback produces an unstable, ghostly resonance that becomes an integral voice within the score.
The score has received international recognition, earning a nomination for Best Score - Independent Film (Foreign Language) at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards. During its international festival run, the film also received multiple honours, including the Official Competition Grand Jury Prize at the Seattle International Film Festival.
